Quattro FTW!
Had a nice trip to Tahoe up I-80 this weekend, quite nice to speed past the chain controls, well, 15-30mph past the chain controls.
Couldn't help but notice some cars (a B6 S4 Wagon springs to mind) zoom past on the snowy road. Are they running snow tyres, know the limits better, or just crazy?
Had a quick play in the parking lot, certainly fun to throw the car about a bit and try to correct, though I really feel like I don't know where the limits are, not that I want to drive close to them, but wonder if I'm going to slowly.
What was most astonishing about the drive back, was the farce that was chain control by caltrans. Seemingly the 2 hour traffic I sat in was simply because trucks were double and trebled parked to put on chains right before the final chain check, while the brightly lit shoulder was empty for miles before. Seriously, WTF!
That added to the lack of respect for "slower traffic keep right" just drives me mad! Though no-one in the Bay area seems to believe in that rule.
One question I had for the ski rack owners out there, are you running with a faring? I normally take the rack off inbetween trips, but haven't this time and notice about a 5MPG drop off or so.
thanks,

was up there this weekend too...took 2 hours to get from Truckee ag check to the pass on Sunday.
picked up dedicated snow tires and it makes a huge difference but snow is snow and it's still dangerous to have to make any sudden stops or turns. Slow is safe...better to wonder if you're going to slow than the have to wait for a tow truck or schedule a visit to the body shop.
As for the rack, 5mpg difference sounds like a bit much. I run the faring on my bike rack to limit the wind noise but don't leave it on cause it is still noisy at freeway speeds.

yeah, that was the area...
Did you also notice the issue was the triple parked trucks just before the 2nd checkpoint?
I'm keen for the dedicate snow tires over the all-seasons, but I'm sure the 300+ miles a week on 101 would quickly wear them out, as well as the 200+ miles to/from the bay area to the colder mountain temperatures.

when I rolled through trucks were chaining up between the ag check & donner pass rd...around 6pm
Some were 2 wide but didn't notice anyone blocking the highway (other than the people that didn't realize that several sections of that road are 3 lanes wide). 2 lanes of 5-10mph for over an hour and not getting out of first gear really sucked. At that point I wished I was in an automatic (actually, I wished I took Monday off so I could ski).
I put less than 150 miles a week on my car so not too worried about wear. If I road trip it somewhere other than the mountains I'll throw my summer wheels back on.

Welcome to Tahoe in the winter...
Always a back up like that...people tryin to pull over to take chains off, others tryin to pull back on to the freeway...others who freak out driving in the snow...and my favorite, those who bring their Toyota Camerys and think they're drivin Audis. Ah, Tahoe...yet somehow it's always worth the trip!
