Instrument Cluster Law Suit

Re: It's the nature of the beast and therefore ok? We are to accept this beast that is forced upon
I agree that the lawyers profit, but we should not be taken advantage of by big corporations that know there is a quality issue. In the UK it was ok to do a recall based on bad instrument clusters, but not here. I'm not willing to accept it's "the nature of the beast." I expect an Audi to be a high quality car with the backing of the manufacturer.

No. This is a direct result of using LCD displays with silicone interconnects to the Glass
The silicone edge connector is subsceptible to dust, oil and heat. More robust plasma and led displays have direct copper connections and do not suffer the same problem.

That problem description sounds too oversimplified and too obvious for any manufacturer who performs
rel testing, not to catch.
Plus LCD's have been a part of our lives since almost the dark ages of micro electronics. They are everywhere
It's probably quite a bit more complex than that. My bet is the LCD display drivers most likely built-in the LCD boards suffer some infant mortality failure subject to thermal and physical shock. Maybe it's extreme ESD in these plasticized vehicle environments.
My bro's A4 (99) seems to suffer from the fading cluster and missing column bit syndrome, but it is temperature dependent. Around winter time, I will be keeping his car for a while, and I'll probably fix (or attempt to fix) this problem at that time.
I doubt we'll see plasma displays on vehicle interiors.

Unless Audi steps up to the plate, this will be my last Audi purchase. I need to have confidence in a manufacturer, especially when we're talking about a product that cost more than $40K. It's OK that it failed, but take care of your customers when it happens.
