Shocks & Springs or Coilovers?
Hey guys I have a 2000 S4 which needs to have the suspension done over. The drivers side front shock is starting to to make creeking noises and I know that i need to replace all four. I was thinking about shocks and springs to just lower the car 0.8" with the Koni sports/Vogtland springs. I have also been thinking about coilovers so that in the spring/summer I can lower the car and in the winter I can raise it due to NE weather conditions. What are people using as a suspension setup? What would you recommend considering that we are in NE and the roads are not the greatest here in Boston. Thanks.

I'd say coilovers because you can ajust the height, but they are a PITA to raise/lower, so most folks just stick with one setting when they are done tinkering with the height. FYI - H&R coilovers easily get frozen into place after one winter, despite generous application of anti-seize on the threads and locking rings.
If you can afford them, look into the Bilstein PSS9s. They not only adjust height, but they had dampening adjustments for ride comfort.

I wouldn't go lower
You're ride height is perfect IMO. Any lower and you'll be a snow plow as well as a curb scraper. Just get some nice shocks and you'll ride like new as well as pick up some handling.

Nice PS job
I think the answer then is it depends on your budget. Adjustable height coilovers if you can afford it is the best. Just put plenty of protection on the threads as they will seize in one winter. Otherwise matched springs and dampers are a fine lower cost solution. Look at the stance of other member's cars with whatever they have on them. I would be very cautious of going too low due to our winters. Good luck.

ya know... after reading about the Vmaxx spring rates, I'd hold off until we get them in my friend's car. It looks like some people like them and some people hate them

The question is, do you really need coils? Are you really going to adjust the height or just get it the high that you like and leave it there? Is it worth paying for an alignment every time you adjust height?
