Spinning through the esses at VIR.....
I had the pleasure of co-driving an ITB Jetta built and owned by German Speed Merchants in Wilmington, NC in the 13 hour Enduro at VIR this year. Had a little incident with a Miata though the esses that one of the members of our crew caught on tape. Our car is the yellow Jetta. No damage, and I was able to finish my 2 hour stint. We finished 3rd in class.
Enjoy!

Nope. It was my first 2 hour stint...
I think at about the 4 hour mark with 9 hours to go. THere were a ton of Miata's in the race and they were by far the most aggressive dirvers out there. When I saw a pack racing, I just stayed away. They acted like it was a 30 min sprint, not a 13 hour enduro!

One of the issues...
...with Miatas and newer drivers is that any idiot can make a Miata go fast. They're incredibly easy to drive fast, but the noobs don't have the judgement to match the speed. Hence...stupid crap like this.
WhereTF did he think you were going to go if he stuck his nose in there ? Once you crank the wheel left on entry to those Esses, you're pretty much committed all the way up, unless you're just poodling along. Trying to force a pass in there is just idiotic.
Inexperience and impatience are a bad combination in enduros.

That was a boneheaded move and he never should have even thought of trying it
Because there are so many miatas running, a lot of the 'packs', even at 4 hrs, are position battles. To podium in a class that big you have to be fast on track all day and in the pits and not make any mistakes. You can't just not make mistakes and drive conservatively and do well.

Miata made a stupid move, especially in an enduro
Now, arguably you should have left him a little more racing room on the inside - what you gave him was marginal.
But the Miata showed poor judgement and impatience to even try the pass right there (esp in an enduro!) plus it looks to me that he took a little slide to the left just before the contact cause he couldn't hold his inside line at that speed. I think that even if you did leave him a little more room, with that slide there was gonna be contact.

Just be very careful when racing on public streets. (The other driver was allegedly high on cocaine)
