I agree that it seems like it should be brake related...but I just can't find anything wrong with
it. Brand new pads in the rear didn't make a difference, but maybe I'll try to bend the pad springs a little to get them to line up on the caliper better.
I'll also recheck the dust shield, but it sounds like a much more dense metal than that. I think the dust shield has a more "tinny" sound.
I'll report back tomorrow...have to get a nail removed from one of my street tires (caught that at Summit Point) and I plan to replace pads and wheels this afternoon.

well happy hunting my man... i don't envy you right now
i hate chasing rattles... then again, my CEL just turned on pulling into my street last night... ugh. I just want ONE of my cars not to give me issues Will VAG it when I get a chance, but my guess is a dead O2 sensor

yep, mine went away with a little bit of the brakes applied.
the brake pads just might not fit as well as they should. changing to another set of brake pads that fit a little bit snugger can make the rattling go away completely. at least that's what happened for me.

And the winner is......
All of you who repeatedly told me it had something to do with the brakes. Congrats!!! You win my gratitude.
I swapped my street pads for my track pads last night because I was tired of my brakes squealing like a banshee each time I wanted to stop.
Upon further inspection, I bent a spring on one of the rear track pads when replacing the caliper. Turns out, I did the same thing to one of the street pads which must have been on the same side. I bent them back into shape, CAREFULLY aligned the caliper, and took the car for a good shakedown, including the cobblestone road in Old Town where I originally heard the rattle. No rattles, no squeaks, no clatter...nothing. The car feels buttoned down again.
Maybe I was subconsciously hoping it was something to do with the suspension so I would have to replace it :P
Thanks again for your help, AWMA. Much appreciated!!!
