1 of 2 key fobs not working
The 2nd key fob has almost never been used...going on 6 years now. None of the buttons are responding. However, the one I use all the time is still on the factory battery and is working fine.
Will a simple change of battery work? Do I have to change and reprogram both at the same time?
Thanks!

If you have a multimeter, check the output from the batteries, should be close to 1.5V each.
If not, change them out, then relearn the remotes to the car... usually just unlocking/locking car with key in door, then pressing buttons.

have you had your instrument cluster replaced in that time? or car battery replaced?
just went through that ordeal. Is it only the remote that doesn't work? Can the key start the car fine?
If only remote doesn't work (same scenario if battery was replaced) - then you just need to reset the remote. Check the user manual on how to do that.
If key doesn't start the car properly (same as if instrument cluster was replaced) key needs to be reprogrammed.
Remember- remote functions are separate from key/immobilizer functions

Thanks for the reply. I had my battery replaced two months ago....
Later today, I'll see if the 2nd fob starts the car okay and take it from there. I am puzzled however. Is resetting and reprogramming the same as what Roger asked me to do?
If I have to reprogram, I assume I can only do this at the dealer?

resetting resets the remote part. Reprogramming reprograms the key and immobilizer program
so you'll know if you need to reprogram if you start the car and it dies on you in a second. That means the key is no longer programmed to work with the immobilizer.
if it starts the car fine, you just need to reset the remote. It's a couple of easy steps, like hitting the unlock key, putting the key in the ignition, turn it to on, then off, take key out, then hit the unlock button again.
I think you can reprogram with a VAG. I had mine done at the dealer cuz i had my instrument cluster replaced (and wasn't aware that they needed all my keys to reprogram them).
