Picture poster / photo album - HTF do I post pics now?
#11
Oh, I thought you meant if they change it like they did when it changed from the old picture poster to whatever followed that.. which broke everything.. I'll see if I can get them to set up something to create a "friendly" url for images...
Thanks!
Thanks!

Just looking at the new style URLs:
//cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.audiworld.com-vbulletin/580x435/80-picture_php_pictureid_19046_2562b654761fb1f08ba92d 0eba7ac94f0d386df7.jpg
My first thoughts are:
a) what if they move my pictures from cimg3 to cimg27?
b) what if the product name changes from vbulletin to vWorldDomination?
c) 19046 seems like a picture ID, sure, but 2562....df7 looks like some kind of hash, what happens when that changes?
Consider the old URLs:
//pictureposter.audiworld.com/525/nav_plus_installed.jpg
Ok, so 525 is my userid and nav_plus_installed.jpg is the filename I uploaded... You can map pictureposter.audiworld.com/525 to any server you want and the URL stays the same... Unless my userid changes or I change the filename, the picture is there forever.
IMNSHO, one of the big reasons Audiworld is still alive is the fact that its history goes back so far. Lose the archives and Audiworld.COM loses huge value. Make is so Audiworld.COM isn't creating new long-lasting archives and the same is true... All that is not meant as a complaint, but rather to explain why there are very good business reasons to create future-proof image URLs, and to create a mapping from the old style to whatever new style is developed.

oh, believe me, I totally understand that part. I've gone round after round with the tech guys hoping to get THEM to understand it.
One thing we also have is the Wiki, which may be a great way to archive things in a more upgrade-proof way.. since the upgrade to newer hardware and software, it's working better than ever..

Yeah, I need to get better at finishing things up I tend to stall the final wrapup for ages, so my post-as-you-go style at least gets the info out there for folks - even if I'm not good about making a final writeup/article/wiki posting. I doubt anyone cares about RNS-D any more for instance, so those old postings breaking isn't really the end of the world, but it's a shame in general to lose history.
