Can we see a thread in an "expanded" view?

The conversation aspect of viewing AW was its best attribute.

Is there a setting to enable this?

You can go into you control panel and update your options to show up to 40 messages per page, but that's the max

Ditto here. As the #1 poster on AW D3 A8 last year, I won't waste my time trying to keep track of messages in this format. Junk! And no, the user guide really failed to answer this question completely, yet it is the most obvious change to the site. Please make a change to the guide to point out that issue (and disaapointment). Better yet, change the site software.
