Anyone help me with an oil leak question...I am seeing oil on the back side of a 2.8 V6 12V (97 A6Q) on the top passenger side. It is not leaking very much or affecting driveability but it's running down the side of the engine and ending up on the underside of the car, I am pretty sure it is not a head gasket leak or valve cover gasket leaking, it appears to be coming from a black rubber seal that is about an 1 1/2" in diameter (rear camshaft seal?), but not sure as it could be coming from anywhere in this quadrant of the engine....any ideas?

Bent Valves with an Intact Timing Belt?

Hello all,

Working on my timing belt and...

Hello all,

Working on my timing belt and running into some very weird happenings. First of all the water pump pulley was starting to wobble quite a bit and make a racket, so I finally decided it was time to suck it up and do the TB procedure. I drove it maybe two miles after I heard the noise, just to get it back home where I could work on it.

Anyway now that I've got all the covers off I can see that the timing belt is perfectly intact; the water pump pulley wobbles half an inch in either direction when I tug at it.

The weirdness is that with the crankshaft holding tool installed at TDC, the wing keys on the camshaft sprockets ARE NOT ALIGNED PROPERLY. Both are slightly clockwise of where they should be; the big holes are both towards the inside of the engine, but the passenger side wing key is 3-4 degrees off of horizontal (clockwise) and the driver's side wing is closer to 10 degrees clockwise. This prevents me from installing the camshaft holding tool and continuing with the procedure.

Does this mean that somehow something happened to knock my engine out of timing? Could the wobbly water pump have done this, without breaking the belt? As I understand it this is impossible, it would have had to have jumped teeth on the belt, and even with the wobble in the pulley there is just not enough play in the belt to jump even one tooth, let alone the several necessary to get this far out of whack.

Does this mean that whoever did the timing belt last (this is my first go at it, had the car for 20K miles) just did a REALLY shoddy job and this whole time I've been driving around with a mistimed engine?

What I'm really worried about is that the water pump somehow threw out the timing and bent some valves. Is this even possible with an intact timing belt? When I crank the engine by hand it is not perfectly smooth...I can't hear anything that sounds like metal on metal, but it does have some points where it feels "sticky". I was attributing this to the severe wobble in the water pump (i.e. the WP pulley is getting "stuck" and causing variable resistance on the rest of the timing belt), but now that I've noticed that the timing is off I'm worried that there's a bent valve in there and I don't want to start the engine to find out with the water pump as wonky as it is. Is 10 degrees of camshaft mistiming enough to bend a valve? I would imagine there's some safety room in there, but then I could also be an idiot.

Lots of questions. Thanks in advance for any help.

Ok before anyone asks... Yes ive STFA lol. Ive seen a few things about people using S3 MAFs on their A4s/A6s. Is this also applicable with the 90s 12V as well? What all can I do to get better performace out of my airbox? When I wrecked my CQ and it smashed the airbox, I noticed small gains from the extra air sucked in... but i certainly dont want to take a baseball bat to my 90Q airbox lol. Also, where can I find the smooth silicon tube to replace the rippled one that goes from my maf to my intake. Surely those ripples have to slow air down? Any help is greatly appreciated!

So, I have a question. When I'm using my VAG-Com to make the final adjustments for the CO pot, I'm able to get block 08 to read 128 for about 30 seconds or so, then it bounces right back to 0. What is going on. Do I just need to keep creeping the pot up until it STAYS at 128? Should it jump right back to 0? Thanks

I'm a new member in need of help. I have quite a few years as a home mechanic but (please don't kill me) I only have time in american trucks and old VWs. I have a '93 100CS wagon with the 2.8 and while I was gone for training (i'm in the army) it overheated and blew on my wife. I expected atleast a headgasket replacement but during tear down I found out the #1 piston has a chunk missing. My question is does anyone have a drawout of where the bolts are to pull the upper oil pan off and is there going to be any surprises to get to the crank? I already have the heads off and the lower oil pan. I appreciate your help. I have replaced the daily driver for my wife but I want to keep the audi for myself and get whatever performance possible out of this powerplant. And btw I do not plan on pulling the engine out. If there are upgrades as far as replacing the pistons for higher compression please let me know or new cams that would be great.

I am having a bitch of a time here, everything I...

I am having a bitch of a time here, everything I read and I'm told by mechanics is that on a 2.8 12V engine to set the timing you need to line up the cams with the large holes in the camshaft sprocket plate facing in toward each other. install the cam locking bar, turn the crankshaft to the timing mark on the crank pulley on the compression stroke for #1 cylinder. Problem is, when I line up the crankshaft pulley to the marks, #3 cylinder is a TDC no #1 There is only one mark on the pulley and only one mark on the cover at around the 1 o-clock position. everything I read says the 2.8 30v engine uses #3 TDC not the 12V. I tried ignoring the pulley mark and used a screwdriver through the spark plug hole to get #1 cylinder to TDC and it's even worse. Any input?

O.k. First, thank you for reading, I am new here, and just got a 1993 Quattro 90cs. It has a 2.8 v6. So I have searched but not found a true answer. So I took the car for a spin last night. Wipers do not function, the fuses are good, and the motor was already replaced. After driving for about 20 Minuets, I returned home, only to find steam coming from the coolant reservoir. It leaked a decent amount of coolant. I notice the cooling and wipers seam to be on the same circuit. I really need help getting this thing sorted out. The check engine light also comes on and it seams to be running really rich. On top of it all the airbag light comes on which honestly is my last concern right now. I am sorry for my inexperience, and thank you all in advance. - Todd

I just changed the head on my 1996 A4 quattro 2.8 12v AFC engine. Camshaft broke so I just bought a used head. I've got it back together but now it won't idle. Played with the gas petal and got it up to 3000 rpm backfires a bit, and the check engine light came on so I hooked up the scanner and it shows random multiple cylinder misfire code p0300. I also installed new plugs. Any ideas?

I need some input in trying to isolate what might cause my 1993 90 CSQ to start blowing a noctious grey/white smoke from both exhausts ONCE heated up.
I put the VAG on it and found Fault code 00537, LAMBDA SENSOR Control Limit Surpassed as well as an intermittant leaking/Sticking #1 Fuel Injector.
I replaced the O2 sensor and double checked the Injector connection and the codes cleared yet once the engine comes up to Temperature, the smoking starts. The fumes smell like unburned hydrocarbons.

I feel that it is one of the temperature controlled Emission Components that may be malfunctioning or a bad vacuum line.
If there was raw fuel leaking into the Combustion Chamber, could I have caused perminent damage to the Cat? Is this symptomatic of a blown Cat?

Car runs a bit warm but relatively well otherwise.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated~
