I just replaced the engine in my 93 audi 90s FWD automatic 160k. I have it running and driving but I cant seem to remember where my wiring for the radiator fans go. The brown wires are for ground, easy enough but, It is thermostatically controlled so the positive wires which is black with a red stripe go somewhere special.

Where do they go!??

Everything helps.
Thanks

Does anyone know if you can buy the small black plastic MMI knob for the 2001 S8 that sits in the center console and adjusts the Navi etc. ? Keyes Audi just quoted me $168 for the whole switch -- makes it an expensive knob replacement.

Also the plastic grommet on the visor itself that snaps in and out of the plastic retainer on the headliner i.e. the one used when the visor is unclipped to shield the side window has completely gone on both my visors. Does anyone know if this is an available part -- full visor is $318.50!

Suspected oil leak in recently purchased A6

Hi all,

I just purchased my first Audi, a 1999...

Hi all,

I just purchased my first Audi, a 1999 A6 Avant Quattro 2.8 30V with 125k miles. I came here to do research before the purchase, and I thought I knew everything to ask the seller. He had records of: all oil changes, replacement of front suspension bushing, a recent brake job and also the timing belt job, all done by a local Audi mechanic. The wording on the record was "timing belt kit". I (apparently wrongly) assumed that an Audi mechanic would know what he was doing.

When I was looking at the car, I test drove it and warmed it up, then popped the hood and listened/looked. It seemed perfectly fine to me. The seller said he never noticed any oil leaks or any smells. Now I've owned the car for a week, and every time I park the car or come to a stop in traffic after driving, I can smell burning oil and sometimes see smoke. When I pop the hood right after driving, I can sometimes see a small stream of smoke coming up from one side of the engine or the other (I think driver side is most common). I've been continually checking the oil level and it doesn't seem to change. My guess is that the mechanic neglected to replace the seals associated with the cams while he was doing the timing belt, and now there is at least one slow leak. Great.

At this point, I am thinking about just doing the entire timing belt service early, for peace of mind. Whether I do it myself, or take it to a shop, I haven't decided. I consider myself proficient enough in auto work to do something like this, I just don't know how long it will take me. I've always owned Subarus, so I've been relatively spoiled in terms of engine access. From reading the Bentley manual that came with the car, I know that accessing this engine for the belt job is going to be a Royal PITA. Do it myself or pay labor...anyone had to make this decision before? What'd you decide and why?

I have read that the Blau timing belt kit is a good one to go with, and I may purchase the one with the "enhanced parts addition": http://www.blauparts.com/proddetail.asp?prod=GH21112-1B

Is that a good plan? Also, can anyone provide me with a list of seals/parts that AREN'T included in that kit that I should replace while I'm doing this work?

And one last request: is there a list anywhere of the tools needed for this work? I have a nice collection of metric tools, but I know from helping my brother with his Jetta that VW/Audi cars often require one-off tools and weird sizes for maintenance work.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I've come to the point in which I've gotta go...

I've come to the point in which I've gotta go ahead and replace my rear brake components. I'm having a little trouble coming to a concenseus.

I'm looking to upgrade the quality, functionablility as well as the appearance of the rear system but understand that very little is offered in terms of upgrading for the 180TT. Also I would like to try to match appearances and performance from the front upgrades to the rear.

Car: 180TTQC
Front upgrades: Brembo x-drilled and PBR metalmaster

In terms of rotors I'm looking towards brembo, disc italia and EBC. I want a x-drilled version to match my fronts.
Pads I'm looking towards EBC Green or Redstuff, Disc Italia Hyperceramic or Titanium Kevlar and the Axxis Ultimate pads.

So wondering what others have done and looking for some opinions! Thanks!

I was wondering if it makes more sense to get the service and timing belt replacement done at an independent shop and what the reasonable costs should be.
Hey guys (and gals), I've STA and read a ton...

Hey guys (and gals), I've STA and read a ton about the allroad, just curious about some more things.. For context I have a 2000 A4 1.8T with 133k miles. Have an APR chip, 18" wheels, stoptech bbk, some other various upgrades (got my wheels and stoptechs used, I really am not loaded with $). Very used to my own wrenching, did the TB service myself, also been through 2 sets of TREs, a CA, MAF, and other random B5 common problems. (We also have an F250 diesel, hence the name).
Anyway, my wife and I are thinking about an allroad to add to the stable. She likes my A4 for handling (she normally drives the truck) and we're thinking a wagon route for family versatility. The allroad really fits the bill. She may go for a 6mt too so the tip tc issue would go away, but not sure.
Anyway, are these cars as much of a "jaguar" as it seems from the forums? I really like my a4 and wouldn't own it if it wasn't a great ride, I complain about the issues from time to time, but I take care of it anyway and enjoy it. It is a great car for me and wouldn't trade it.
I get a bit scared off by the tc issue (would not tackle myself) and less so turbo replacement (might try an engine pull, crazy enough to consider). The air suspension seems to be within my skills. But is the car reliable enough to not leave you stranded (do not want the wife and kids on the side of the road)? Any a4 owners that can chime in?

Thanks!
