Default Ok. Another silicone question.

If silicone is bad for the tires/dash/etc., then why have I seen it recommended to spray silicone on CV joint boots, door and trunk weatherstripping, and other rubber-related parts that need protection. Both can't be right.

Thanks,
dB

Default the idea is to prevent them from drying out

Weatherstripping, CV Joints, etc,

They will crack when dried out. If you spray regular silicone on the items regularly it should be ok, but the real damage from Armoral type silicones is when you stop using it, it dries and cracks.

Here is a quote from the Autopia forums
"More on armor all and silicone oils.....
The problem with armor all is the silicone oils it uses. .....It's not so much when you are using the product, it is when you STOP using the product, it dries out the rubber or vinyl, etc, etc. Ever see tires brown or dashboards crack?! Some tire manufacturers won't even warranty a tire if a product for sidewall defects like armor all was used on the sidewall. "

There are good products out for use on these type of items. Go to a local BMW dealer and ask for "Gummi Phledge" (german for rubber care I beleave). Its the best stuff for rubber I have seen/used.

Default I use "silcone lubricant" from a spray can to "protect" CV boots. Is this different than using...

armoral on dashes and tires?

Default it depends on the type of silicone, there are good silicones and bad ones for rubber.

I will try and find the technical name for each
