Finally solved the PIA water dripping from my mirrors when I wash- - ->
I've dealt with it long enough...
Spend a day detailing both Audi's, vacumn every exterior nook and groove to get all the water out and vacumn the front & bottom of the mirrors only to have water drip out of the bottom of the mirror and run down the side leaving water spots.
I've tried to ignore it, using One Grand Show Off to remove the water spots, but inevitably as soon as I drive, water begins to spit out of the side view mirrors and leave water spots all over the flanks!
I've even let the car sit overnight and still have had this happen.
So I popped open the mirror housing, three hours after I washed the car, and sure enough there was a puddle of watter sitting in the bottom of the housing! I grabbed my cordless DeWalt drill and a 3/16's drill bit and put a small hole in the bottom of the housing just inside and in front of the mounting screw.
Problem solved!!!
The water quickly drained out of the housing. Now I can vacumn the water right out of the housing through the new hole!
You can see the small hole in the bottom right of the housing...

how do you pop off the mirror? or looking at the pic, can one just drill into the black plastic
just the .25" or so to go through the casing while still leaving the mirror on?

Absolutely will work on Alu Sport mirrors- - >
the hole is drilled in the black plastic base not in the painted portion of the housing...I plan to replace my housings and the base with hole will stay as is.

Removing the mirror is easy but you can drill it without removing the mirror. I just preferred to clean any bits of plastic left from the drill bit.
To remove the mirror, press the inside edge all the way in so the outer edge of the mirror sticks out enough to get your fingers under the mirror and pull. It will fairly easily pop out. To snap it back in just position it on the mount on the motor and press till it clicks! Of course being this is the detailing forum, make sure your clean the finger prints off the glass!
