Default Importing a Mini

<img src="http://miniusa.com/sections/gallery/image/1600x1200/SH77498_1600.jpg">

Hello everyone. Long time no speak.

Anyhow, I wonder if anyone here might be able to answer my question. I want to import a 2007 Mini Cooper S from the US. Of course I have to get the DRL's activated and I will also need to have a speedometer to read KPH. I believe the US models only have a speedo that reads MPH and not a dual one. I think I would have to get that replaced/modified. If that is the case, how much would that cost?

Thanks

Default Why would you import a Mini? How much could you possibly save?...

How much are going to lose when you sell it?
I can understand importing Porsches, RS4s, S4s, certain MBs and bimmers, but a Mini???

Default It's for my wife....

My mother now lives in Buffalo, so we're down there all the time. Base Cooper S's start at $31k CDN here and $22k USD in NY. Mind you, stock coopers here are slightly different than ones in the US (name bi-xenons are stock on CDN S's). Even with the 6.1% duty and paying GST/PST at the border, savings of about $4k CDN for same level of options. There's quite an arbitrage at the moment with currency rates at 1.0600.
Looks like BMW/Mini are hedged at 1.3000.

Default suspension is different for the US models

they have the tiny rear sway bar so that the US versions understeer like crazy to "protect" the US consumer. Canadian rear bar is 4mm thicker, IIRC. Other parts may also be different, like the bumpers to meet impact standards.

Dont't forget the R8 about a 28K difference in retail base price.
