Default I have a similar HP Notebook

that I bought last spring. Mine is one step down from this one, and for word processing, web browsing, etc. I have absolutely no complaints. The battery lasts fairly long, and really long if you are not using the wireless network and bluetooth. Under those conditions I can get 4 hours or more from the battery. I have no regrets.
HP does preinstall a ton of useless software that you need to delete improve your speed though.

Looks like pretty good bang for the buck for $999

Default I'm a Dell guy...

Not everyone knows, but most Dell PCs and Laptops will allow you install any Dell OEM OS such as Win XP Pro without needing to activate it. The OEM install disk recognizes the machine and auto activates.

I'm not suggesting you pirate the OS but if you just want to 'try before you buy' an OS that will perform better on the machine, having a Dell makes it easy...

My 2 cents.

Default I have one too, great notebook! 4gb of ram, 250gb HD, NVIDIA 256MB video card... nice!

make sure it has an HDMI out port.
I personally think it's a bit too expensive, considering I paid $1,099 for the same one (2gb of ram) 1.5 years ago. $799 to $899 should be a good price IMO.

This model is listed as "NEW" on the HP website, can't see being more than 6 months old...
