OPTI COAT
So, I bit the bullet and applied Opti Coat on my Glacier White SQ5 last weekend. Really could not have been much easier. The car is brand new, so I only had to clay it and wash with Dawn blue detergent to clean the surface. I also did a quick once over with rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle and a couple of microfiber towels.
Then it's as easy as keeping the applicator pad a little bit wet with the material, applying a few drops on each panel and lightly rubbing the material on, first up and down and then left and right...nice and easy...no hurry. I kept a mf applicator pad handy to spread out any wet spots where too much material was sitting.
The results are fantastic. The finish looks like hard white plastic...different from wax. The finish looks like the way electric blue paint looks, except its white...if that makes any sense.
The main point I'd like to make is that pretty much anyone can apply this..it's really easy and you can have a finish that a detailler would probably charge you $500.00 for. Just take your time and it's finished in a morning!

The car should have been polished for optimal results. It makes a difference.

Yes, the surface needs to be approaching perfection prior to applying any coating. That's very basic. Same strategy even on a brand new car.

FWIW, the consumer DIY version is called Opti-Coat 2.0. Professional installers use Opti-Coat PRO which is a thicker product and takes more expertise to install. My Opti-Coat PRO install ran me $300 including a full paint prep prior to the application.

I guess Optimum has now discontinued the sale of the DIY version OC 2.0.

If you got an opti-coat pro for $300 the installer either sold off a 2.0 as a pro or he sold under MAP for pro which is in violation of his certified installer agreement with optimum. You can check to see if he's certified by searching opti coat pro installers.
