Engine shampoo - DIY or take it to the Dealer?
Is it really as easy and safe to "spray and wash" with a can of do it yourself from the car parts depot or should I leave it to the dealer?
Thanks!
Thanks!

That phrase scares me
engine shampoo? What exactly is the problem with your engine - is it leaking fluids so it's all nasty, or is the plastic that envelopes it just dusty? Modern engines don't get nasty enough anymore to use Gunk, they just need a mop 'n' glo with some soapy water and then a plastic treatment.

simple green and h2o in spray container.....
spray on a barely warm engine...use brush is needed. lightly wash off (mist) with hose and don't aim at electrical components. start car to evap stuff off.

What I have done for years is to take the car to a DIY car wash & use the high pressure...
soap spray for the engine block and surrounding engine bay areas, and then rinse. This process removes the road grime build-up, but won't make it look like a "detail" job. However, I'm careful not to point the high pressure water stream directly into the electrical connectors/components. This method works in winter or summer, and doesn't requrie hours of work. The engines in my three vehicles ('96, '98, and '00) look clean (close to new) doing this about twice per year.
