So I've been thinking about adding a DVD unit to my car for a long time, and I think I may have found one that's affordable and still really cool... The AVH-4000PDVD (picture below). It seems to be akin to the popular AVIC-D3, but without GPS, which is just fine with me. I have my trusty Tom-tom for that, and prefer to use a removable unit anyway.
I've searched the forums a bit, but I'm still a bit unsure of what to expect for the install, and I'm not purchasing the unit until I'm sure I can get it in the car and looking GOOD. Crutchfield doesn't even list it as compatible with my car.
I have an '03 A4 Avant, with BOSE system stock.
It seems that most people have used a double-din conversion kit, removing the middle piece so the nav unit will fit. Is this the standard method, and does it look good in the end? I'm good with electronics and wiring, but I'm not good with painting and custom trim work in the car, so I'd like to have that handed to me.
Any special wiring considerations? I've seen that there's a harness involved... is this all pretty straightforward stuff?
I'd really appreciate any advice!
