Default I need help setting up my Phatbox with my RNS-E

I have an 04 S4 (XM, Bose, On-Star, no multi-func wheel) that I just installed my RNS-E in ( an EU unit that has been updated with US firmware so that everything works now, AM radio, US map, XM recognition). I also have a Phatbox that I'd like to install. I have 2 questions here: One is, if I have no need for XM, how exactly would I hook up the phatbox to my RNS-E? I have this cable

but this thing won't plug into anything.

Do I need this cable?

Its Audi's part #4B0051735B, cd changer cable. And if this is what I need, how and exactly where do I connect the pins? Does someone have a diagram of the pin-outs on the harness that I used to connect my nav? Can someone draw a quick diagram? NSX JR?

Secondly, what if I do want to also, in the future, buy a new XM tuner and I want to listen to both XM and the Phatbox. Can someone fully breakdown the wiring/splicing/wire and pin layout to make this custom harness a reality?

For now, question number one is a major priority. I need more than FM radio! ))

Thanks guys!

I hope my questions all make sense...

Default some answers.

see my sig for my pbox install and Lee's OEM XM install. Read both...thoroughly.

Yes, you need the CD changer cable (too bad they cost $100).

You'll need to add those pins to your current 20 pin connector (currently behind your RNS-E). In the process, you'll need to remove the three audio wires (L, R, GND) that are have currently occupied the 20 pin connector to support audio for the XM/Sirius tuner (FYI - the OEM XM/Sirius tuner relies on the CANbus to control the tuner). Make sure to make a note of which pin location they were in; remember to tape them off etc.

For running the Pbox, with RNS-E and OEM XM or Sirius, just follow the Todd's post in www.navplus.us and Lee's pdf in my sig:
http://www.navplus.us/forum/viewtopic.php?t=837

I have put together a parts list in an excel spreadsheet for making this custom interface (dependant on having the round 13 pin changer interface in the trunk). The parts will probably run you $50 and won't require you to rip apart the pbox cable; it will be completely plug/play.

Also, I have the special wire extraction tools that you can borrow...if need be (only if you live in the US). These will make it much easier for you to remove those three pins from the 20 pin connector. Drop me an email if you think you need them.

Sorry for the data dump...but this is basically what you need to do.

Default Looks like Ted has you covered. Let me know if you have any more Q's...

Once you have the long cable, you'll pretty much have a car setup just like Todd had to start with(RNS with round plug in trunk.) Then you can just make the custom cable like he did to hook everything up. The best part is that you'll already have the power and data wires for your XM tuner aleady in the trunk (and already in the right connectors). So all you'd have to do is worry about the audio wires at your XM tuner box. Here's what I would suggest.

1-Install the long Audi cable in your car as Ted suggests. To do this you will remove the three SAT radio audio wires from your headunit.

2-Make a Todd cable. Plug into your new trunk cable.

3-Plug your short phat cable into the Todd cable.

4-Plug your phat into the short phat cable.

5-Remove the small connector (with 5 wires) from your SAT tuner.

6-Remove the wires from pins 5,6,7. These are your audio wires. (Realize that you have removed the SAT audio wires from your headunit in step 1 and now the tuner in this step. So these wires aren't connected to anything on either end anymore). Leave the other wires in pins 1 & 2 of this connector.

7-Connect the six dangling wire ends from your Todd cable to the six open slots in your SAT small connector (in the right order of course). These are your new audio wires.

8-Plug the small connector back into the SAT tuner. That's it.

If you want to install phatbox only:

1-Install the long Audi cable in your car as Ted suggests. To do this you will remove the three SAT radio audio wires from your headunit.

2-Plug your short phat cable into the long audi cable.

3-Plug your phat into the short phat cable.

4-Unplug the power connector from your SAT tuner. This is the larger black plug with two wires. This will keep your headunit from being able to switch over to SAT radio. (Which you don't want to do since you have unplugged the audio wires in step 1).

Default Re: special wire extraction tools

Teddy,

Can I rent your special wire extraction tools? I have not decided if I am going to keep the XM Sat tuner, but I am adding my phatbox and bluetooth module into the RNS-E integration mix. I would only need to borrow the tools for a few days as I will have all the pieces. Please let me know.
