Not getting audible "chirp" when pushing lock button beneath door handle
2010 A6 4.2
When I used the button beneath the door handle to lock the car with the whole "keyless entry" feature, it used to audibly "chirp" and I knew the car was locked.
I can press the button now and the car appears to lock, but I don't hear the chirp.
in addition, if a person comes to the door, they can open it by pulling the handle, however the alarm will go off.
Why is this not working like it has been for the last 4 years?

Your car is not locked!
I don't have details and diagrams handy, but I had a similar problem with a 2000 A4. The problem you have is that the vacuum system cannot fully lock the doors- there are two possible problems here- either the central vacuum pump is getting weak or you have a leak in the central vac system. Look on the forums, but what I would do would be to try to pull a vacuum on the system- don't know how much but you need to find the amount the vacuum is supposed to be, pull that amount with a vacuum pump- if the locks lock properly the problem is the pump and if they don't the problem is a leak. If it is the pump, search the forums- someone a few years ago posted about running soapy water through a misbehaving central vac pump but I don't know what the outcome was.
