Is background static just a natural feature in some songs?

Is background static just a natural feature in some songs?
I swear, regardless of which stereo in my house I seem to want to pick up some static on certain songs. other, however, seem to have none.
Especially on older tracks like Radiohead or Nirvana or the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
So is this static a direct result of a poor reciever / stereo equiptment or is it simply present in the recording?
