Which amps can safely be mounted upside down?
I know that amplifiers are not supposed to be mounted upside down, because of cooling issues.
But are there any amps that can be inversely mounted safer than others?
I want to regain some of my trunk space by removing my Stealthbox, then I want to install an amp under the rear deck, instead of on the seatback where it is now.
Currently I have a Phoenix Gold 75x4. But the instruction manual recommends against mounting it upside down.
It seems to be a pretty good amp, and I rarely drive it anywhere near its limit. So I am wondering if it would be safe to mount it under the rear deck. Or should I sell it and get something else?
THanks,
Peter

None!!
By the laws of thermo-dynamics, no a,ps should be mounted upside down since heat rises, and if the amp is mounted under the rear deck, the heat will just sit there. I guess if the amp had a fan that would help, and also if you do not drive the amp to its limits, I guess it will not produce too much heat. Just remember, heat is the number killer of amps.

Esoteric amps are OK upside down
They are fan cooled and claerly state in the install manual that they can safely be mounted in any position as long as you maintain 2" of airspace all the way around the amp

If you don't drive it hard, I think it would be fine.
I've mounted Pioneer, Alpine, Soundstream, A/D/S, Kenwood, and DEI amplifiers upside down without any of them ever overheating and none of them had internal fans. It would be better to build a shelf under there, but that may not be practicle for you, as it would take up a little extra space.
That's my experience...YMMV.
