So I'm looking at the RSQ8 exhaust. Under the recommended items it lists the associated sound kit as a separate purchase.

My question is if this is necessary and what exactly does it do? And is it a physical interface or is it software you upload or what?

I have posted a link to both below. If I buy the exhaust will I need that sound kit? If not what is the specific use case of it?

You will just need Akra exhaust system, sound kit is not necessary unless you want an extra remote to open/close valves manually.

I did mine Akra exhaust system without sound kit, but I have installed CETE AVC so I can manually open/close valves using factory button without an extra remote.

As mentioned above you do not need the sound kit. The sound kit is a valve controller that uses a keyfob to open/close the valves.

With that said I would recommend with an exhaust like this to add in a CETE valve controller. I say this because you will really hear the exhaust valves opening and closing at what seems like random when the car controls the valves because the exhaust will be so much louder than stock. With the CETE valve controller you will have full control of the exhaust valves using the factory controls to open and close, no need for an extra keyfob.
