Default Oil Top-Off

So 7500 miles into my Q8, per MMI the oil level is down to half. Yes I am aware of the VW engines and their habit of chugging down some oil like it's Oktoberfest everyday, but just in case, what type of oil (?W-??) should I use to top off when I need to? It's a US model so 3.0T Petrol engine.

Thanks.

It has to meet VW spec 50800. Right now only Castrol Edge Professional meets that spec. You have a label inside hood.

Give it 24 hours and check again.

The sensor isn't the most accurate. Ensure your car is level for a few minutes as well.

Post parking mine on an incline it drops to half too.

I had the same MMI Oil reading. I added a quart of Castrol synthetic 5w40. A few thousand miles later, showing full oil.

That's not approved 50800 oil nor is it even the right weight.

I hope you get your oil sump drained and refilled with spec oil.

Please recommend the correct oil I should use. I am in a very warm climate and have never had the vehicle in anything below 40 deg F. I will get an oil change in the coming weeks.

In North America, the only approved oil for your engine can only be bought at the dealer (locally)

It's: https://www.europaparts.com/castrol-...25771ldsp.html

FWIW Motul makes an approved 508 Specific.

Yup you're right. I would recommend against it although it's because I'm way too **** on my car.

By swapping to Motul there will be cross contamination with oil changes done at the dealer as they will only use Castrol products due to stock.

Is it a concern? Probably not but I'm a fickle. Haha

With you fickle/**** is an understatement. You probably add oil by the eye dropper-ful.
Cross contamination between oils....well...come on....
One could also argue the Motul is better than the Castrol....
Although I must say if you ever go to sell your A8 I am first in line to buy it.
