Default Too Hot!!!

I just moved from Monterey, CA to Dallas Tx. It was a great drive through the desert. Over the last weeks my A/C started to work sporadically. If it was hot outside, the compressor would not stay on until the car was moving at a constant speed. Now its not working at all. Also I noted that the auxillary fan would not come on if the A/C was on or when I parked and the car was hot. The temperature gauge will sometimes register and others sometimes not. I could use some direction before i place my car on the mercy of some unknown mechanic. I would like to meet any of you in Dallas.

Default Re: Too Hot!!!

You've found your own problem, If the temp gauge isn't registering, the fans aren't going to know to come on or not.

Find the connector to the sensor, and check to see if it's damaged or dirty.

Default Sounds like a job for Mr. Multi-function temperature switch (MFTS) replacement. You need..

to either take it to the stealer and get it changed OR buy it, and a 29 mm socket (deeper the better) and change it when the engine is cold. Search this forum for "MFTS" from a few months ago.

When you change the MFTS, you will at least get a temp signal to the gauge and, hopefully, to the fan switches. There may be an interlock which prevents the A/C from running unless the fans are running.

Default Yes, sir. Same symptoms, MFTS worked like a charm

Changed the t-stat too and the car ran smoother.

Default Now to find Mr. MFTS

Thanks, I'll check around for the switch, I've ordered from Blau before...any other sugestions.
I have a thermostat that I ordered, I was going to change it myself but it seemed more difficult than my 67 camaro in high school. Maybe is time for the bentley.

Default Cody: It doesn't have to be that special (did you ever post the part no.?). In Canada, I bought..

a pretty chrome WESTWARD 0.5 in drive socket Part Number DMS 12629 (D was deep, 12 was 1/2", the 6 is six point and the 29 was the 29 mm). I did not have to use any extensions but I did disconnect the wires to the other temp senders in the immediate area (under the front portion of the intake manifold) and the rubber hose from the throttle body and the idle stablizer valve. I actually did the job in my "Sunday" clothes (one Sunday morning) while trying to figure out how long it would take to do the job after my wife and I got back from brunch. Before I knew it (about 15 minutes), it was done and, with a bit of fancy finger work plugging the hole while I swapped the new one for the old one, I probably only lost about 200 mL of coolant at most. Too bad changing the cam position sensor wasn't as easy :>(
