Default steering noise on UrS4

Okay, car has run great for a few months but has developed a wierd noise akin to a power steering failure aka (distinct wining sound) only when car is started cold but still noticable during steering the car any time. Car steers normally other than noise. Have looked at pump, seems okay and not using any oil. Maybe flush with new oil and put in Mineral Oil as it says instead of cheaper power steering oil currently in reservoir. Thanks a lot!

The hydraulic system on the UrS4 has been the subject of admonitions to use only the Audi specified GL200 fluid since the vehicle was introduced 20 years ago. It is certainly possible that the power steering fluid in the system is not providing required lubrication of the pump or steering rack. Redline Power Steering fluid is presently in my system along with a Magnefine inline filter in the return line. The system must be kept scrupulously clean whatever is in the system. A check of the reservoir for a bright metallic color filter screen and a bright, olive color fluid will disclose the condition of your system. Once the hoses start to deteriorate inside, you need some extra help to keep particles from clogging the orifices in actuators and hoses and tiny screens in banjo bolt ends.

Usually mentioned in the discussion of hydraulic systems is Pentosin, the maker of CHF 11S, the original factory fill for Audi systems. It has taken knocks for an increasing price recently, but if your system is properly maintained and does not leak, 2 Liters won't stress the budget too much.

Default where to get Pentosin

Thanks, the Pentosin site doesn't have a link to distributors, where might one order this hydraulic fluid?

Many dealers have Pentosin products alongside the Audi branded Autobahn products. There is a list of online parts suppliers in the FAQ. It includes both Audi dealers and aftermarket parts. Shop them to find the best prices when you consider shipping costs in the total. http://tinyurl.com/culzctd

Default More issues with hydraulics

Okay, so I just got in some Pentosin from O'Reilly Auto Parts who even offer shipping. Problem is that before I got around to flushing old system my hydraulics have gone down hill furthur with visible leaking around pump. The threaded cap that has a cross shaped slot for big philips screwdriver on top has lost it's o ring, I replaced that and refilled reservoir but still not improved; steering noise, oil leaking from other places too.
Ideas?

Yes. Buy and install a new X-plug and O-ring (comes together with the plug). Removal install with a modified drag-link socket (See photos under X-plug photo):

NAPA sells a good tool as part # NB95. It helps to have a tool large enough to fill the slot. Make sure the o-ring goes in place undamaged. Look for any burrs on the threads. Hopefully you have seen some information on this repair so you know there are small parts and springs under the X-plug that you don't want to lose.

For other areas leaking, you need to describe specifically where you have leaks. This may take some solvent cleaner to clean off all the leaks so you can determine where they come from. If the additional leaks are on the pump itself, you may be better off sourcing a replacement pump.

That's what she said!

On a more serious note, we (you, Tom, and I have had this drag link socket tool conversation on another forum). Here is the Link to the NAPA Tool

Still might want its corners filed off.

$23.40 each - jeeez, do they make a non-sterling version... I thought napa was inexpensive

eta - search ebay for "drag link socket" and there are lots for under $10 - if you have time to wait
