Grrr... Coolant loss!
OK guys, I'm trying to figure out where my coolant is going. It'll drink an inch out of the resirvoir tank in about 700 miles. So far, I've found no coolant in the oil, and the spark plugs all look good. The timing belt and water pump were replaced by me at 120k miles, car now has 129k. The coolant loss problem started a couple thousand miles ago. I hope its just some stupid hose clamp, but there's no puddle or drip under the car, it only happens while driving. I'm going insane, anyone have suggestions? The car runs fine, put new plugs and caps in last night. Pulls like a raped ape on crack

If it's not a leaky hose/clamp......
It couild be a cracked overflow tank. I had it happen on my car where coolant would mysteriously disapear and I found that the back side of the plastic tank had these litle microcracks that only leaks under pressure. You totally cannot even see them unless you takeout the tank and look real hard. New part is about $35 from Blau or VW/audi supplier - NOT dealer, lol.
PS, stop raping those cracked-up apes.

just had the exact problem...
droping 0.5 inch per week. As just mentioned was a small crack in the expansion tank... at the junction of the return line. The tip off was a small amount of coolant was visable sitting on the lip all the way around the tank. Only saw the leak after I knew where to look.
Also consider the after run pump... wont leak initially unless it's running (several min after the car turns off). Mine failed also with similar sympt... but a noticable drip under the car. With the expansion tank there was no drip.
good luck

Similar Problem in 95 S6
Finally found a little boiler scale around the coolant overflow tank hose. Had tightened everything but still leaked. Took hose off and found a hairline crack in the tank. Something else to check.
