Here's my thoughts...
In a word, no. You need the sport wheel from '96-97. I think this because of my research into the possibility of a sport wheel swap into a B3 car. Let's just say that the details are long, but the short of it is that the "guts" don't match in '98.
You gotta do some archive searching on this - I have been doing it for a week, and only have a little more knowledge than when I started, LOL.

Well, they can be recovered. STFA for the discussions.
Some company or other rebuilt one of our wheels, and it looks really nice.
I don't remember the name of the company or who had it done, but I DO remember that the results were very nice.

Actually, early '98 wheels (on pre-98.5s) will work, as they're the same part...
...as the S6 wheel. As long as it's from a VIN up to 8D-W-007799 then it will work (or part number 4A0 419 091 BA for the wheel itself).
On a '98.5+ wheel the spline shaft is smaller than the older cars so it won't physically fit.

OK, smarty - how about *this*...
Do you have the part numbers for the column switches and column covers to convert the B3 setup to the late B4 setup such that the sport wheel can be used?
I have searched up and down the archives for this info, and have not found it.
