My car started running rough today. I am afraid I know why but I would like some more experienced opinions.

I drove about 10 miles on the highway, pulled off and into a parking lot. When I parked the car the idle was rough. An hour later I came out and started the car, again the idle was rough. When I drove home on the highway the power was really poor, almost no torque at less than 3,000rpm. If I stepped on the gas at 60mph in 5th (2,600 rpm) the engine was very rough.

When I got home and parked the car I left it running. There was a very strong sulfer odor. I put my hand behind the exhaust pipe and the exhaust pulses were definitely. The engine was not shaking when I looked at or felt it.

What do you think? Where should I look for problems? Will a VAG analysis tell me anything?

as simple as you have loose sparkplugs. Go through the procedure in the URL link. You WILL find the problem.

I pulled the plugs and checked them. They do look like they have been in there a while. I will get new ones tomorrow.

Once I got the plugs out I looked into each cylinder with a flashlight. #4 looks wet, the others look dry so I will make the assumption that #4 is probably the bad one. I pulled the wire, the boot looks fine. The resistance checks out to 5kohms just like it should. The plug measures 1.2kohms which I also assume is correct.

According to UrS4boy this would point to the POS since the engine is rough at idle. Fortunately plugs 4 and 5 are on the POS with the extra channel.

I will throw in new plugs and then run through the rest of the diagnostic procedure and see if it still points to #4 and the POS.

Is the POS this part? If so it is a little pricey.

that is the price for a new POS. you can do the whole 1.8t conversion for about that price.
