Build date info...
I checked the sticker on the driver side door sill, and it states a build date of 09/92. The original window sticker says 1993, as does the VIN. I checked rather thoroughly, and it does not appear that the car was hit in the front end. Any ideas?

It's exactly as I predicted. The model year run ends at the end of June, i.e. the last....
92's were built in June of 92. The factory then takes a month off (equipment is changed, etc. while the workers go to Spain or Turkey and party) and then they start the next model year in August, i.e. Aug 92 is the start of the 93 model year, the carbon fiber trim, etc. I presume that they had some older style A/C condensors left over from the 92 model year when they built your car. By the time they got to mine (10/92) build date, they presumably had used up the older style condensors and were using the new style ones. This is very similar to the early 95 S6's built in the fall of 94 - they came with the older four spoke steering wheel until the stock was depleted and then the switch was made to the three spoke. Same with the five spoke versus the Avus-style wheels.

Thank you for the info. The clear coat problem is all over the car, not just the front end. The car has never been painted. It appears that this was caused by total neglect from the previous owner. The reason I bought the car was because the engine and tranny seemed fine. Obviously, this otherwise neglectful owner at least had the common sense to have the oil and filters changed.
