Default Bilstein HDs are a loose fit.

When I installed the HDs in my car, the front struts had a much more loose fit in the housing than the Boge struts that came out. The Boge were very tight. The HDs had maybe as much as 4-5mm of space all around the strut (I did not measure, that is a guess).

Has anyone else with HD's noticed this? Were yours loose fitting also?

I am thinking of taking them out and wrapping the strut with rubber or something to fill the gap.

Default The insert should not rock back an forth after the Bilstein strut cap is torqued down...

The bottom of the insert should be pressed firmly to the bottom of the strut housing so there's no movement. IIRC there is some space around the insert body but that doesn't affect the positioning.

Default I wrapped the lower portion with duct tape

until they were snug. Also tightened them down quite firmly. They have not come loose and I did that 5 years ago.

Default It does not matter that the cartridge is smaller, but that retaining nut needs to be tight, tight,

tight! There is a special tool but I just use monster channel locks.

Talk to the distributor of your shocks. They will get you the key from Bilstein for free.

My guess is the strut cap is loose.

Default If I take the strut mount off and let the strut rise up, there is no play that I can create on my

own. But it just seem like having all that room in there would just cause some thing to wear over time.

I was thinking something like that might not be a bad idea. I don't see how it could hurt anyway.

Default I use the channelocks also. I have some that have a hex bite and they get an awesome grip. The cap

is very tight, but I just worry since there is nothing in the bottom to prevent lateral movement.

I will try that, though the Channelocks work great ; )
