Default Another frickin soldered in bulb...

So I'm doing some minor mods to the consoles on the 92 S4, and replacing all the burned out light bulbs since it's all apart anyway.

Seat heaters? Check.
Ashtray? Check.
Diff lock? Check.
Glove box? Check.
Mirror control? Check.
Cigarette lighters? Bugger.

I can't believe there's yet another soldered in bulb in these cars. It looks basically the same as the one I used in the diff locks, but I was more than ready to put my soldering iron away ;-(

At less than $5 each, I might just break down and buy a couple. Either way, I don't feel like messing with it tonight- I guess I'll drive with the car torn apart for another day or so.

Default Didn't you know those bulbs were supposed to last forever? ; )

Have you inquired if these bulbs are available through Blauparts? $5 a bulb is wicked expensive.

Default Well, I just destroyed one trying to get it apart, so I guess I'm buying new...

It's a black plastic bulb holder and a small bulb, but I can't for the life of me figure how you're supposed to get one apart without mangling it, or worse how it could go back together after you soldered in a new bulb.

Arghhh. I've got a couple spares, but there's not much point in tearing them apart if I can't get them back together. Anyone BTDT? I STFA to no avail.

Default The bulb and the black holder are one piece. It can be purchased at the dealer.

Maybe you can solder in a bulb too. I just decided to buy the oem part.

On another note, I also replaced bulbs in my diff switch this weekend. If anyone wants to do the same, you need 3 12v 50MA bulbs from radio shack. The job is pretty easy.

Default I've not come across this failure, either. I'd think the R&R would be similar...

to any of the other soldered bulbs? Yeah, I agree the bulb holders and the bulb don't seem to be meant to be separated.

Default Radio Shack bulb.$1.99 for 2 bulbs.272-1097 IIRC.

They are soldered in. Use a dewicker and resolder.Like the diff lock bulb, easy fix if you can solder.

Default Yes, and mirror control is PIA to do... careful not to loose the little ball bearing inside...

I tried using an LED bulb on the mirror controller but it was too dim, the radio shack bulb works perfect. I used an LED bulb on the seat heater switches, they will last longer than the car now.

For the mirror controller, solder skills is not the issue, it's dissasembling that sucka!
