Default '95 S6 ,"SAFE" Displayed on Radio, Help Please!

I just had ny ignition switch and starter motor replaced(defective switch fried my starter!). Upon picking up my car, I noted the "SAFE" message displayed on my radio. Obviously, the battery was run down and now I need the security code to re-activate my radio. Problem: my radio was replaced 4 times in 14yrs and I have no clue what the code is. Is there a way to enter some default code so I can get my radio functioning again? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Dave

Check the outside of the radio's case, it's fairly common for the tech to write te code on the case. Also checking in your owner's manual, the shop that replaced the radio should have
put a copy of the code there.

Default "defective switch fried my starter!" Yep. More than one person has

lost a starter to a broken ignition switch on these cars. This why it is wise to replace the switch (with OEM from the dealer) as soon as it starts to act strangely.

Thanks for the suggestions. I already looked in the manual. I'll have to get the tool to remove the radio and check it. Thanks!

UrS4boy: This is my 4th ignition switch! Two were done by Audi on recall during the warranty. They are poor quality switches. This last service was pricy to say the least. I've never owned any other car where the ignition switch was replaced.

How many keys do you have on your key chain with your ignition key?

Just the key and remote. I was told to only have the remote and no other keys after the second replacement!

Correct answer (it was a trick question). Also, I always turn my key back manually after release (it's kind of a trick - I *have* shut the car off the odd time) just to make sure the starter is NOT still engaged. I never had a switch failure on my 93 but I did change it when I had the instrument cluster out to upgrade to 2W bulbs. Still have the original, uncracked switch for a spare.

Perhaps the dealer will be able to produce a code with the serial number (that is if the code wasn't changed after install).

Wasn't there a white vs. black ign. switch debacle where the black plastic one was believed to be better/last longer, or is that a myth?
