1.8t coilpack failure report

Diifferent coil packs in your photos, not used for AAN conversion
The 1.8t coils in your photo are not the same as the 115L coils used for the Dave Forgie conversion.
The one in your photo are the same as those used on my AEB engined 1.8t, which differ from the later 115L coils (which friction fit and do not bolt onto the head).
I don't remember the difference off the top of my head between the two (drivers mounted on firewall perhaps rather than integrated?), but the 115L coils are notorious for their short lives on the A4 (B5) forums.
I have a friend with a 2001 A4 1.8t, and he's gone through 11 coil packs so far in only three years. I have a 1999.5 a4 1.8t using the older style of coil packs, AND my engine has been modded (runs hotter), and the coil packs on mine are still original to the car with 200k kilometers on it.
All the later style coil packs for the 1.8t engines just seem delicate.

Hmmm.. I wonder how much better the 115 R coil packs are (or not). Audi obviously wasn't ...
satisfied with either the design or integrity or supplier of the 115 L. I knew there was a 115 M but only recently (this week) found out they have moved through M to N to P to Q to R.
And the price has gone up a bit. One has to assume the R's are better than the L's.
Or not.

There may be trend that No.5 is more prone to failure than the others. How was your coil pack .....
oriented if the front of the engine is North, what direction was the plug end of the coil pack facing? As shown in my sig photo, mine are oriented so No. 1 is SE; 2, 3, and 4 are SW and No. 5 is NE. I am wondering if No. 5 in the SE position causes the head of the coil pack to contact the cam cover, leading to an influx of heat directly into the head of the coil pack, leading to its premature failure.
