Default 1.8t coilpack failure report

Just a heads up to the list collective, I've been running the 1.8t coils for a few months now with no problems but after my first time at the race track with the new coils (Watkins glen #1 with the NEQ club) I managed to cook one.

I've waited to post until now because the problem was intermittant and only under boost so I let it get worse to make it easier to track down. Today it got bad enough to start happening at idle so I tracked it down to the #5 coil.

This is with NO coil pack cover EVER being run on the car with these coils. I think they perform fine under street conditions but in a full on track environment the temperatures at the cylinder head are just too much for these coils. I think to make them suitable some sort of heat sink should be fashioned....

YMMV

Default What about on the 1.8t?

Arent those coils covered in the 1.8t as opposed to being exposed to the air like they are being run in the AAN? Why arent they failing (in the high HP versions) as folks claim they are in the AAN?

As for the heatsink, how about a nice bit of 1/4 inch bar stock thats laid across the coils. threaded rod, split washers and nuts would hold them down i think.

Default on the stock applications, they are cooled much better

the ONLY thing the factory put over those coils was a piece of plastic. In fact, audi cut tons of holes in those covers around the coils to help them breate. On the AAN I suspect the recess in the valve cover is NOT helping...

Yes, a piece of aluminum bar stock would be a good start, I'm thinking some PC heat sinks attached to the bar stock would be even better, with springs on the bottom of the bar stock much like the stock cover, and better still thermal paste between the bar stock and the coils.

Default already in the works

I'm going to be running 034 Stage IIC standalone engine management on the car but in my case I will be sharing an ECU with my 3.6L v8 twin turbo project car (dual map feature rocks my world).

034 builds the ECUs with either support for either transistorized coils (like on the 1.8t) or non transistorized coils (where the drivers or POSes are actually built into the ecu). My ecu was built with the latter case so I need to run different coils anyway. I'm going with the same style of high output coil, just with no drivers in them cause I'm too cheap to buy another Stage IIC ecu just for my wagon

Will they fit if you use a 20v na cover? I assume that would cool better.

Default eh?

It looks like there is a heat sink between the spark plug bore and the actual coilpack. Maybe we shouldn't trim the length of the 1.8T coil?
