Default Issue with first fast charge at a 350kW EA charger

Charging rate started around 90, and quickly moved to 67……shouldn’t it be closer to 150?? Did I make a mistake picking a 350 charger instead of a 150 charger?

TIA!

UPDATE: Called EA, and they said there was definitely something wrong with that particular charger to charge that slowly.. I probably should’ve tried a different charger, but I didn’t need much anyway to get back home… It was just sort of a quick experiment.

How was working with the charger? Were the cables stiffer or more difficult to work with than on a 150?

I’ve never tried to use a 150 cable yet.

But this was very stiff, clearly much thicker than 150 cable, but wasn’t a real problem to plug into the E-Tron once I remembered to open up the bottom port.

That seems to be the downside of the high voltage chargers...the cables have to be well insulated, liquid cooled, etc. I have given up trying to "park between the lines" at a station. I'll park at whatever angle I need to have to give me the easiest hook up.

I’ve had issues with all the 350 units I’ve tried today (on a long road trip). The 150 units in the same stations have all been fine.

I wonder if it’s the heat (110F right now) — maybe those units have stricter tolerances?

I think so… It was 106° where I was trying to charge. I found this other thread which seems to explain the issue, and the fixes:

I've had no issues with either the 150kw or 350kw charger. Maybe the heat is causing the charging bug. On a interesting note, I'm able to max out at 157kw on a 350kw charger.

What was the state of your battery when you started to charge? Above 80% of charge the power delivered drops below 100kW. The stated maximum power charging level for the Audi is about 150kW.

is there a secret to know at what angle one needs to park relative to the charger unit?
Seems like it's always in a bind when I use the EA stations, but I haven't used them enough to find the rhyme or reason....

LOL. Well, I have only really used the EA chargers. When they are set up in a row, so that you pull in perpendicular to the row.. I will pull in head first at a diagonal, so that my charging port is in front of the hose, but angled, to minimize the amount "twist" I have to put on the charger head when I force it into the car. Unfortunately, that can partially block the companion hose. When the stations are situated so that you pull in beside them, I try to give myself as much space between the station and the car, again to reduce the amount of bending I have to force on the hose.

EA should really have hired some Occupational Therapists to design more ergonomic stations. Still, with the charging ports located in about every possible location on the car bodies across the range of EV's, charging stations clearly have a challenge for these high voltage units. Makes you kind of miss the days of "is it in the right fender or the left fender?"
