Default Re: I've had both, much prefer the 4.2

About the same gas mileage for me, no turbo lag, sounds better!, and most of all... I've had much less mechanical issues.

Default Test drive them both first...

I really wanted to go with the 4.2 when I was buying, but driving them back to back (over and over again) I so preferred the 2.7t, the car just felt so much more drivable day in day out. But 4 of my last 5 cars have been turbos so it may be that I've just become accustom to the rush of a turbo/s.

Gas milage is about the same btw.

Ditto to what others said. I've owned both in tip; if tip, hands down the 4.2

Default BiTurbo

Sounds cooler:-) But, the 4.2 has less that could go wrong with it. I live near the mountains where the 4.2 loses power at altitude and the 2.7 just pumps more air.

Default 2.7T

you may be avoiding some issues by going 4.2 route but you are committed to the tiptronic which has major issues, just search torque converter. But if you are not into letting the car cool down after a drive and are lazy on oil changes and maint. then maybe the 4.2 is the best. For me I try to avoid automatics as much as possible.

I got the 2.7 and chipped it because I love the 2.7 so much in my B5 S4.

Default Thanks everyone...probably going with another 2.7T with 6MT after all.

I reminded my wife how easy it was to shift our old allroad with a manual transmission plus I brought up the issue of possible lag with the tip/turbo and she wants no part of that. I actually found a 2001 with just 15,000 miles on it, (how is that possible?) but someone else just put a deposit on it.

Keep looking for exactly what you want. It took me 4 months, was worth the wait.

Default 4.2 can excellerate quickly from a slow rolling merge onto the hwy...

I can go from 5mph in the metered merge lane, to 70mph very quickly (with no lag) by just stomping on the accelerator. Try that with a turbo.
