The worst happened!
Well last evening driving to diner. I was behind a motorcycle and at some point heard some noise that seemed to be coming from it. But listening closely it was from my engine, a clicking noise. I put in neutral pulled over and turned off the ignition. The car is 101k (2003, 6 speed) and I was about to change the timing belt this month. The car flat bedded to the dealer. Talked to them this morning. The belt skiped a notch and a valve broke off. They gave me a $9500 estimate (short block $3835, 2 cylinders $1474, head gasket and head bolds about $5500 for part and $4000 for labor). Can I do better than that? I am planning to have the car towed back to my place and shop around to get it fixed..... Your take..... I live in Milford PA next to New Jersey and New York States.

2 options --
1) You 'll nned to search, but I seem to remember something about an extended warranty by Audi on Timing belt failures. Search quickly though, I beleive there is a Deadline in early Sept.
2) Call AutoSpeed in Vorhees, NJ to discuss rebuilding options. You might be able to find a used block or look at a stage III rebuild.

Link to AutoSpeed

did they actually pull the head to see that a valve broke? My wife's A4 had the tensioner fail and
the result was catastrophic but no valves broke, just bent.... it happened at highway speed (70-75mph, 3K+/- rpm) and I was able to pull the head, polish the top of the piston and have it the head rebuilt with all new valves, etc. Was nowhere near that. I'd at least look into it. I know it's a lot more involved with the V6 but that's insane. You could buy an entire engine and have it installed for half that probably.

I think you are right. I am going to the dealer this afternoon. And I will talk to them. I am thinking of sending the car to AutoSpeed in NJ

so way over price...also talk our own EX-PZ..Sam is a great indy.
An in the North Philly area HI-PO Specialties. IIRC.
I can tell you the dealer is taking major advantage of the situation.
You don't need new heads to replace one valve. You have to also see if the piston was destroyed or can be pollished out.
