Default Wiper going slow, stopping - dying?

Had notice that wiper is going slow. Last week even stopped several times.

Motor going out? If so, which fits my car (2002 Allroad)? Read there are '4 pin' and '5 pin' out there.

Dealer gave me part number 4B1 955 113 A ($300; won't happen!)

Dealer also said more common than motor is the linkage. Suggested 4B1 955 603 B 9 ($185; same. Don't have the cash).

First: trying to find out motor or linkage
Second: trying to find the right part (above numbers don't show on ebay for example; better to look by matching donor car year/model)

Happened to me recently and this got them moving again properly.

Aren't you the guy that wanted to buy a staggered wheel setup and go stg3 with your allroad? $300 should be a drop in the bucket if you're planning on spending that kind of money.

To answer your question, the linkage is the problem. I've been through this multiple times on C5s and B6s. Follow the instructions for removal in the response above. Be sure to fully disassemble the linkage and use fine grade steel wool/emery cloth on the rotational mating surfaces. Then grease(not oil) both surfaces before re-assembly to lubricate and prevent future water ingress.

You are right on both accounts: a) staggered (its the other way around: savings from DIY will be spent on nice summer shoes and socks for her) and b) linkage (not motor).

Took the darn thing out yesterday. Sure enough, couldn't even move one of the long rotator pins with plays.

The bad: while trying to hammer it out (despite plenty of PB Blaster soaking), I broke the alu mounting bracket. Used ebay on order.

Not too long ago, had same symptoms on B5 A4. Probably got lucky: had ordered and installed motor PLUS linkage (never checked if it was motor or linkage).

Should have clear view by week end.

As far as staggered (come spring), here is what I settled on:

245 45 19 front
275 40 19 rear

Wheels:
Front: 19x8.0, Offset +5 (20.25mm pushout (current: 20mm)
Rear: 19x10, Offset +25 (29.25mm pushout (crrunt: 20mm)

I'm sure you've already thought of it, but definitely disassemble and lube the replacement linkage before install. An extra 15 mins of preventive maintenance can save you (or, more imporatntly, your wife/family) from being stuck in a downpour with no wipers.

By the way, there's a typo in the web address in your sig.

I'm having the same problem with my 2005 S4 and was just considering replacing the linkage with this one:

Do people on this forum think that it will solve my slow wiper problem??

My money is on the linkage. Since posting, I have changed Beetle, Passat, A4. Some cases, I could move the linkage even with very long pliers.
Trying to get the shaft out of the housing (hammer and chisel), i even broke one alu housing.

If its still moving: take a apart (take note where the washers go) and put good lube (not thin WD40 and similar; i would use antizeize maybe?). Assemble, and you should be good.
