VAG-COM questions ....
About ready to buy a VAG-COM kit. Looking at OBDTool.com
1) Is the shareware version of the software sufficient for most troubleshoot scenarios or will I end up wanting to upgrade?
2) I'm currently having an air suspension issue. Will the VAG-COM be able to tell me whether the issue is the compressor vs. the control unit vs. the height sensors, etc.? Or will it just tell me I have a general air suspension system issue?
Thanks!

I was just digging into the shareware VAG-COM last night.
I had one of those ElmScan 5 modems between the OBD-II port and the serial port on my laptop, and it pulls OBD-II codes fine. I thought since it's only a modem, I should be able to use it for VAG-COM. Negative. VAG-COM's software uses different commands for the modem than the Elm looks for.
As much as I'm all for home-brewing something, judging by the looks of things, it might just be easier to get the whole kit-n-kaboodle from Ross Tech.
