Default Uughh....

Strange thumping sound coming from front end. Thought wheel beering initially now indy thinks differential bearing. Factory warranty runs out tomorrow (yikes) but also have extended. My indy said to call Audi dealer (2hours away) and open a case which I did. Said the service would be covered and made appt for next week. Here's my questions though.

1. First has anyone heard of a differential bearing (I could be wrong on exactly what he described) going out on an 05 with 30k? I am taking it in tomorrow for a fluids test to confirm potentially.

2. I just put new 18x8.5 rims on the car a week ago. Would that have caused that failure and should I put my stock back on if I take in for service. I really would rather not. They are just he old school rs6 rims.

Thanks. Really sucks as my audi dealer is 2 hours away. So I have to drive it up there and drop off for I am guessing a couple weeks. Hopefully audi will give me a loaner since it's potentially a major repair. Indy said they typically replace tranny.

I'd throw the stock wheels on if it's not too difficult. IME, dealers will find any excuse not to honor the warranty.

Anyone? Do the aftermarket wheels need to come off? Transmission failure at 30k - is that normal? Thanks - really at a loss on this one.

IMHO, no I don't think aftermarket wheels caused the failure. Torque converters are nortorious for failures. Did you get a CEL?

My TC failed at 32k (no symptoms, just a code). Clunking on shifting at 37k led to a new transmission.

Not sure why wheels would have caused this issue.

I'm not sure how wheels could have caused the issue either, assuming it is the TC. Still, I've seen dealers invent reasons why they shouldn't honor the warranty. There's a ton of play in the warranty terms for their own opinions, justified with any facts or not.

I'm probably a little more leery than some since I had a dealer tell me they wouldn't replace my turbos when a local indy (who's been in business for a long time and has a very good rep) said they should be replaced.

Thanks all. I will take the wheels off. This happened on the last day of my factory warranty thank goodness.
