Default Towing/ Hitch Questions...

I have a 2001 Allroad. I kinow the OEM hitch is not available.

I have a few questions:

1. I want to buy a 14-17' fishing boat. Most likley aluminum. Not a big boat by any means. What class of hitch would I need for this? Would a clas II suffice, or wouldd it need to be class III?

2. What hitch is the best available, the Westfalia Euro hitch, or something else, and what is the price?

3. Being that I have a 2001, I read that the wiring fo the harness will be a problem, is thios true?

4. I will not be installing this myself, does anyone have suggestions in the Portland, Oregon area? What should I expect to pay for instalation?

I'd only do the OEM hitch: US if you can find it or Bosal from Europe. They are physically strong enough in design and in they way it mount.

All other hitches simple bolt to the underside of the spare tire cavity.

The OEM's replace the internal bumper and bolt to pre made mounts INSIDE the car's structure: Between the rear deck and underside of the car.

Keep in mind US is rated at 3500 lbs. While the car can haul more (BTDT) you have to figure the tranny and its ability to haul too.

Do you have a link to teh available Class II + models?

It looks like the average aluminum 15' fishing boat or something comproable would be in the 1000-2000 pound range with the trailer, so not that heavy.

I ordered 15 OEM hitches just a few months ago. They ARE still available and have a European tow capacity of 2300Kgs, or just over 5000lbs. Whilst all 15 of the hitches I ordered have been sold, I can give you the information and contact number if you want to purchase one. Email me.

I am seriously thinking about just getting the cheap curt hitch. I am looking for an aluminum 12-14' fishing boat- not heavy at all- however I think the biggest weight would be the trailer actually.

I guess I will see if I can even get an OEM and then decide...

You CAN get an OEM hitch. See Silvas post above. I bought one from his group buy, I think it ended up being about $600. I have a 2001 so I also bought the wiring harness/computer. I never got it to work, it was a waste of money. You can simply buy a powered taillight converter from any auto parts store for $20-$30 and splice it in to the taillight wires in about 30 min. If you have the Parktronic this set up will not deactivate it. That's really the only downside.

You can get one.... but for the $130 or so it hard to beat the Curt one. I love mine, looks fine, works well and hauls anything i want to ever haul with an allroad.

So the wiring harness doesn't work on the 2001?
