sunroof leak and A-pillar water stain?

after some searching, i've read several instances of sunroof leaks, but mostly in A4s. for the allroad, i haven't seen to much mention of this.
i've attached a pic (not mine but the leak is in a similar place) of where i'm experiencing water slowly accumulating by the front cabin light. i hadn't noticed it in the year since i've owned the car ('04 CPO) before, but a 20 minute drive in heavy rain made it obvious. after seeing this, i inspected the headliner and noticed a two water stains (that appear to have been there for a while as they weren't wet when i found this leak). there was one above the driver side A-pillar and one above the passenger side A-pillar. both about 3"x3".
i saw some mention of the sunroof drains clogging, but again that was in A4s. any other experience with this? it doesn't sound as if this is the roof support issue (from the tech bulletin) as the leaks areas are well in front of the roof supports.
any help in diagnosing would be appreciated. thanks...

Re: sunroof leak and A-pillar water stain?
allroad has drain tubes for the sunroof -- two front and two rear. Per the Bentley, you'll need a long cable (90 in.), such as a speedometer inner cable.
Fronts (routed through A-pillars and exit underneath in front of doors) are cleaned from above (sunroof opening). Rears exit behind bumper cover behind rear wheel. Bentley recommends removing bumper cover and cleaning tube from below.
I've cleaned them on an 85 GTi and a 94 S4, but never on the allroad.

The picture you show is actually mine...
I took the vehicle several times to the dealer and all they kept doing is "cleaning" the drains.
After numerous visits, a couple of which made matters MUCH worse, and a nice certified letter to the dealership's CEO I finally got the necessary resources involved to resolve the issue.
Turned out the sunroof "tub" was cracked (pretty much from factory). The tub is not available seperately and required a full sunroof replacement (minus motor and glass).
I have been leak-free ever since.
Initially I would check for plugged drains. If after clearing them you continued to have problems I would begin to suspect an issue with the sunroof tub.
Hope this information helps!

Gavin

Dealing with the same issue - driving through heavy rainstorm resulted in leaking at both A-pillars and center light cluster. This is on a 03 but in excellent shape. I doubt the drain-tubes are plugged but I will check. I will not be happy if I need to replace sunroof components. Any idea what the cost is for such repair?

I'm pretty sure there is a recall on this from Audi for the allroads.
Our 2004 also had a problem and they found the tube broken, so they replaced it under our CPO warranty, all we paid was the $50 deductible but I'm pretty sure the recall will re-imburse anyone who paid to have it fixed, as well as repair it if it's currently leaking.
Check with your dealer or Audi USA for a recall.

My guess is the sunroof tub also. Had mine replaced 2 weeks ago and it stopped. Very $ though. Can prob get away with removing th headliner and using silicone as a temp solution. The class action is for clogged drains or faulty drains. A cracked tub is usually from heat and the plastic deteriorating over time. Best of luck to you.
FYI, you can get a used tub off of ebay for a good price:

Thanks for the info and suggestions! I will follow up with the Dealer and see how this turns out. I'll update here. Haven't had a good luck with this dealer before so not looking forward to it.

I have never had good luck with a dealer, so dont think you are being singled out! Best of luck to you. One thing I have always found is supplying your own parts to the dealer or indy will always save you a lot of $. Only issue is warranty on the parts if they botch the install as then it is a finger pointing match.
