Default Sunday was not a good day for the AR.

I was on my way home from BJ's wholesale with a load of stuff yesterday everything was hunky dory. I stopped to pay a toll and noticed a diesely/rattling type sound but thought it must be another vehicle. About 1/2 a mile down the road on an on-ramp I hear a loud grinding/rattling type noise and start to pull over and the car just shuts off as I glide to a stop. No CEL leading up to the problem but now the CEL is on! Anyhow, off it went on a flatbed to the dealer.

My guess is either the transmission or timing belt. I had the thermostat replaced last week, do they have to mess with the TB to get at it?

When I turn the ignition the starter just turns...that's it.

Default Wow, that sounds bad. Prepare for the worst, oil starvation (siezed) or valve interference

Did you watch the gauges at the end? Ex PZ kw will probably know. What does that name mean? If the thermostat was put in wrong and couldn't open, it could have overheated, but there would probably be a leak you would have seen.

Rattly noises followed by no go is usually no oil = engine is toast.

Default No leaks, temp read normal, oil was changed two weeks ago but...

I have suspected soemthing funky with tranny last couple of weeks. Tends to slip and sometimes drop hard from 5 to 4.

Just talked to dealer, they are going to look at it today.

Default If it were seized, the starter wouldn't spin it. Maybe a spun bearing, but unlikely.

It's possible the timing belt broke (how many miles on the car?), or, more likely, something driven by the timing belt broke. If it did, you're going to need the heads rebuilt/replaced, but at least it isn't an entire motor. I don't know how deep you have to go for a thermostat, so I can't say if it's related.

Sorry to hear about it. That's a very bad feeling when it happens. Good luck.

Default TB was replaced at 60-something. 88k now.

I just find it awfully coincidental that the thermostat was worked on last week and this occurs 40 or so miles later.

Default As I fellow ex-Mainer, all I can say is that's a "wicked pissa"....

Let us know what they say the cause is. I had a spark plug "snap" off and cause a similar experience. Good luck.

Yes... they have to mess with the TB to get to the thermostat.

TB needs to be removed to get to the thermostat. It should have been replaced when doing TB.
