Default Normal for coilpacks to go in pairs? I replaced 2 about 6 months ago...

was getting the blinking CEL and the misfires, had it scanned, showed cylinder 3 and 6 misfires. Recently have been feeling a misfire here and there, assumed coilpack, had it scanned, cylinder 2 and 5. Coincidence???

Default had the same happen...

its not always, but it does happen.

At this point I'd change all of the originals.

Default So what causes these things to go out? ...

I've had my 2001 now for about 25K miles and I've never replaced one. I'm not sure what the the previous owner may have replaced, but it sounds like I should always keep some in the car just in case. Is this a "borrowed time" issue like not replacing a timing belt until 120K miles or are the failure more random than that?

Default I've wondered that myself. The 3 times my cp's have failed they failed 2 at a time.

I've always replaced all 6 of them each time.

Default There are posts on here that seem to indicate that 2001 models...

do not have the same coilpacks as later models and thus do not have the same issues with them failing. Mine is a 2004. That being said, I replaced the first 2 at about 80k miles and the 2 I just replaced were at 88k. Some seem to have to replace them much earlier and others later, not sure why.

Also, both times for me were side by side cylinders, not sure if that is coincidence or not.

Default Two of mine went within a week of each other.

Cylinder nos. 4 and 1 went within a week of each other. They were L code coils, on my '03 2.7.

Depending on the misfires, the scan might show two or more cylinders misfiring when only one actually is. Try scanning it while driving or just after driving, and see if any codes are pending. The first one/most common one that shows up is probably the culprit.
