for this purpose there should be rubber duster such as OEM VAG springs has!
If you look closely at that VAG air sack with bellows picture, you will notice that the actual air sack is the top part, you can clearly see exposed rubber there spilling out of aluminum sleeve. I think the rubber protection sleeve if for a shock that goes through the middle of air sack.

So the new one is not that much better, if any, than our Gen 2

another reason to keep the allroad once the warranty expires, although the Q5 and the new S4 are very tempting.

ok, just to understand the idea of aluminum outer guide and that rubber "hernia" comes out of the aluminum outer guide look at the screenshots below:





Study in detail the device in the context. Also as you can see, OEM VAG air spring has black rubber protective bellows specially for sand and mud.

And the main idea of aluminium outer guide is to to prevent destructive changes in the geometry of air springs in the moment of critical stretching under the pressure; to prevent cracks and breaks in rubber crease of air spring sleeves!
