The ICMs do exactly what they say. They control when to send the fire signal to each coil. You would most likely get misfire codes from the 3 coils on the bank controlled by the bad ICM. You would not have seen the misfire follow the coil the way you did. That would be a HUGE coincidence.
I'm not saying the Import Direct coils are bad, because I haven't dealt with them. I will say, these cars are sensitive to non original parts. Just something to consider.

FCPEuro has the OE Beru coils for $44 each btw...just been thru this with my car at 256,000 miles, the coils were all original ! Read somewhere that the coils 'should' be replaced every 100K tho.

Consensus seems to point to staying with OE supplier(s) for best long term results. In this case ...Beru.

Default ICM explained

The coil pack need a larger current than the ECU supply. The ICM take the small current/signal from the ECU and make it into a larger one that will drive the coil pack. They are nothing more than a set of MOSFET transistors used as a switch.

Why do we need them in between the ECU and the coil? Due to the high current in the switching process, heat is generated hence the heat sink under them it the airbox. Because of the heat generated, they will fail at some point. It is cheaper to replace an external device than your ECU (if they had design the circuit that control the high current within.)

The ECU determine when to energize the coil, the ICM amplifies the signal.
