Yup, the "hmmmm, did I forget something" works and ensures you look half way intelligent while at it instead of putting they key against your forehead which makes you look just plain dumb 
But seriously... it works. That's how I've been operating mine for a while now. Even with new batteries and approaching from behind (antenna is in the rear bumper I think), I get very pathetic range like 20-30 feet with occasional success at 50ish feet, while any other car factory car I ever had/tried activates from 3x as far minimum. That's not even mentioning aftermarket systems I had that can do like 1/4 mile or more and communicate both ways too...

Thats a very interesting answer. Actually there is a fault code but I dismissed it. "Driver door fails to deadlock". There may well be a fault with the drivers door lock.
How does the drivers door lock affect range of keyfob?
Don't know if you are in UK or USA but driver door is the right side for me.

One more question: did that door ever lock on you while you were inside the car soon after you got in and without starting the engine?
If so, that is definitely the switch inside the door lock that detects if the door is open/closed.
I think it was discussed here so try to do a search on it...
