I'm reading my owners manual. It says drifting in neutral w/ engine off will damage the auto trans.

Does anyone know why and or what it will damage?

Key forward, press brake, engage neutral, down hill you go. I broke down at the top of a mountain.

Default OH.. I thought you meant drifting..ie sideways. You mean coasting....

yes coasting can screw up the quatro and the tranny...same reason you only flat bed the car and not tow it.

;-) When they wrote the owners manual I don't think they were considering "drifting".

Default Well, for one thing...

...when it comes time to slot it into D while coasting at anything more than 2-3 mph will strip the gears!
You don't have a clutch to gingerly engage it by rev-matching engine speed to road speed.

I used to do this all the time (in Europe, where gas is extraordinarly expensive), but only on cars with manual trannies.
Another issue in "America" is that we have a silly ignition key lock system; if you're not carefull with the key, you'll turn it completely off which means that the steering may lock, and you won't be able to steer the car.
You won't have any brake boost assistance either if the ignition is completely off.

So, not a good idea to coast at least from the steering and braking, never mind from tranny point of view.

Trans oil pump is driven by torque convertor which isn't spinning with engine off, and in neutral.

Default I didn't coast/drift to start the car. I drifted to the grocery store for distilled water.

I had a coolant hose come off. When I got home later I mixed it back up to 50/50.

I left the ignition forward so I could steer. Perhaps when they wrote that they figured there was a danger of slipping it into drive while the car was moving.??

Quick Reply: I'm reading my owners manual. It says drifting in neutral w/ engine off will damage the auto trans.
