I think I knew this day would come (another son and GTI story)
Well, it finally happened. 11:00 PM last night I get a call from my son. Dad... I have a problem... I think the engine (1.8T) blew... I heard a pop...oil and smoke everywhere."
I drove to get him and saw all his friends hanging with him. Oil was everywhere...all over the engine, the hood the radiator, the ground. We waited over an hour for a flat bed and took it to VAG-Motorsports our local Audi/VW mod shop. (during the day Audi/VW dealer Tech)
Tonight we got the post mortem.. a 7" hole in the block where the connecting rod that fractured went through. (20K miles on the 2002 car)
My son (17 1/2) is doing everything not to cry.. (I would be)After all the $$ he poured into his 337 and all the hopes and plans he had for it.
I'd like to take the other guy who put the mods in...only 6 months ago.. to court. He never said they could blow the engine... I'd never win but....
The choices as we see it are:
1. Short block and return the car to stock....sell the car.
2. New/used block and aftermarket (stronger) pistons and internals and keep all the mods.
3. Complete engine/Turbo/Intercooler from a wrecked car at a salvage yard. (Least costly) take off most of the mods and sell them.
4. Hope that my Geico Mechanical Breakdown Coverage will cover this even though its been modded. (dream on)
5. Get a moped
I need a drink...

What mods did it have?
The 1.8T and 2.7T blocks are nearly indestructible under normal (even modified) conditions. There have only been a handful of reported failures on AudiWorld over the past several years.
