Default HELP!! have no reverse

When backing up sloped driveway, it will just start to rev and not move at the top. Tran fluid? Slipping? Grears? What's happening?

sounds like the dreaded torque converter failure.

Well it isn't the converter failure... yet. This is a symptom of it. Full failure will follow. Sometimes you will get the failure on the converter and if you decide to keep driving you lose reverse. Sometimes reverse happens first.

What year and spec car?

I changed my converter out and then 6k later developed the exact problem you describe.

so now what...? if you changed TC and have same problem. Dealer can only look at it on the 25th of May, we have an after market warranty that should cover the TC.

My reverse is taking longer & longer to engage is this a sign of TC failure, I'de like to take care of it ahead of time & before my 3rd party warranty is up, I've only got about 8k miles to go on it, or do I have to wait until it fails before I can take it to the dealer & have them check it & poss. replace it?

Loss of reverse is NOT THE TORQUE CONVERTER!! We have been over this many times. (see my previous posts) Loss of reverse is a failure of the piston seal on the "F" (reverse) clutch & has no association with the torque converter. The torque converter just turns the input shaft of the transmission it doesn't know if the car is moving forward or backward so if the transmission works in drive the TQ is working. The only thing related between these two problems is they are both common to this vintage ZF 5hpxx transmission weather audi, bmw, etc. they all saw the same failure. If reverse is delayed in engagement the seal is starting to fail. A good power brake in reverse may push it over the edge. You definitely want this to fail under warranty! I
I just did a 97 A8 this week with reverse failure. Right around 7k out the door. NOT cheap.

This is NOT the torque convertor! This is a internal transmission problem. It has failed NOW and can be duplicated at the dealer without a steep driveway by simply doing a convertor stall speed test in drive and then reverse. Put your foot ON the brake put the selector in DRIVE give it the gas, the RPMs should stop at about 1,800. Then try it in reverse, will likely climb higher (don't go above 2,500 or so). If so the tranny is toast.
